This is an alert & update on an outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus Type 1 (EHV-1) that originated at a National Cutting horse competition in Utah last week. This outbreak has since spread past the primary cases & has now been reported in secondary & tertiary cases among “in-contact” horses on home premises with the virus being brought back by horses attending the Utah event. There have now been reports of these secondary & tertiary cases in many Western United States & Western Canada. EHV-1 shows a variety of symptoms ranging from a-symptomatic carrier to fever of 102-103, nasal discharge & neurological signs starting with the hind limbs. It is thought that vaccination for EHV-1 (Rhinopneumanitis vaccine) will not prevent the neurological form. Isolation, quarantine, & proper bio-security measures are essential to stop the spread & current outbreak. There is no cure & there have been fatalities. Some horses will respond to anti-inflammatories & supportive care.
My recommendation is not to panic, do not attend shows where there are other than local horses, & call the office if you have any questions.
